RAGE HD v1.0 (iOS Game) Touchhle android

3D action.

During his presentation at QuakeCon 2010, the head of id Software demonstrated his new project, RAGE, running on the iPhone. Despite the rather modest computing capabilities of a mobile device by today’s standards, the game achieved an impressive 60 frames per second.

RAGE is the new brainchild of the founders of the 3D action genre. Published by Bethesda Softworks, it is a mix of first-person shooter and racing with role-playing elements, set in a post-apocalyptic world. The developers drew inspiration from the Mad Max films and the Fallout series. The racing component of the game was influenced by projects such as MotorStorm and BurnOut. Development has been ongoing for over three years, and the heart of the product is the new cross-platform id Tech 5 engine.

Carmack’s demonstration of id Tech 5’s capabilities could well be the most impressive technology we’ve seen on the iPhone. It runs on the iPhone 4, but can easily be run on the iPhone 3GS. The visuals are on par with PlayStation 2 and Xbox games, and the engine is likely capable of handling most modern games for these platforms if they were ported to the iPhone.

Carmack later explained to the impressed audience that the demo was not using the full id Tech 5 engine, but a custom development tool that utilizes some of the new engine’s elements (such as megatextures), written specifically for the iPhone. The full engine will be used in the PC and console editions of RAGE.

Thus, the first RAGE game for the iPhone/iPod Touch serves as a small demonstration of the new title’s new capabilities, ahead of the larger multi-platform release next year.

Players worldwide have high expectations for the game, as each id Software product boasts unique features in addition to impressive technology. The developers promise that RAGE will be the first game in which they will be able to abandon the traditional linear corridors and adopt the style of such successful projects as BioShock and Crysis. iTunes Store
